Hafiz
I think of Hafiz as a “Brother of my heart.” I love the intensity of his passion for God. His passion marinated every aspect of his life. In this steel piece, I gave him a bit of a big belly. My thought was Middle Eastern food is so delicious, it would be hard to be moderate in consuming it! Since he was a Sufi, I assumed he danced, or at least did the spinning they do. I chose to make his skirt short rather than long, in order to show off his dancer’s calves. He was very playful and mischievous, which I tried to capture on his face. From his poetry I picked up that he was deeply concerned about people whose experiences in life had caused their spirits to be bent. When he spoke of drinking wine, it had a sacramental sense about it.
