Sitting on the Arm of God
Franciscan monk Richard Rohr the first of his books I read, Everything Belongs, turned me on to the famous Persian poet, Hafiz. I was smitten by Hafiz’s poetry and I ordered a book. One of Hafiz’s poems spoke to me so deeply, that I had a monk who knew calligraphy render it for me. It had been hanging on my study wall for over 20 years by the time I decided the first line needed to be rendered in copper - “My heart sits on the arm of God, like a tethered falcon.” I wanted to capture the tenderness that God feels towards us, how we can lean in towards Him, and experience tenderness. The most common patina I use, as applied here, is liver of sulfur, which brings out the details. The frame is welded polished steel.
